Not far from Capo Carbonara at the southernmost tip of the island, Notteri pond is only separated from the sea by a thin strip of sand. With a surface area of some 34ha and a depth of no more than 50cm/20", it has neither a river to feed it nor an outlet in the sea, so it depends entirely on rainfall to maintain its level. The latter also determines the salinity levels, which in turn decide the number of pink flamingo who sojourn here in winter.
