This fabulous turn-of-the-century mansion was built by Thomas Walsh, an Irish immigrant who struck it rich in the Colorado goldfields. After moving his family to Washington, Walsh commissioned Henry Andersen to design a mansion befitting his vast wealth. He had made about $45 million from the sale of his Camp Bird Mine in Colorado. A balustraded terrace, a second-story loggia, ornate limestone trim, bay swells and a red-tiled mansard roof adorn the tan brick exterior of the mansion. The arched double doors of the entrance portico open onto a sumptuous hall three stories high and topped by a stained-glass skylight.
