The Rathauspark (Town Hall Park), created in 1873, provides perspective for the main buildings along the Ring. Its eight sculptures honour the great figures who have made a mark on Vienna's history, from Duke Henry II Jasormigott, who chose the city as his capital, and Josef von Sonnenfels, advisor to Maria Theresa, who abolished torture. A large Christmas market is held here in December, while films are shown on a giant screen in summer.
