A genuine city in a city, the kraton district, protected by a white wall with four vaulted openings, comprises a vast residential neighbourhood crisscrossed by lanes. The one-storey houses were traditionally set aside for palace servants and employees, members of the court and the lesser nobility of Yogyakarta. In addition to the kraton itself, hidden behind a second wall, the batik workshops and Taman Sari palace are worth a visit. All in all, a lively and picturesque district.
