Overlooking Kagoshima Bay, the volcano Sakurajima is alive and well... to such an extent that inhabitants have adapted to its almost permanent activity (its last eruption, dating back to 1914, was catastrophic). They have constructed shelters and dug channels into the sides of the volcano to control the streams of lava. From Yunohira lookout, you can enjoy a superb view over both Sakurajima and the sea.
